Audubon International

Forest Dunes became involved with Audubon International in March of 1997. The purpose of their involvement was and is to help to create an environmentally sound development which incorporates sustainable resource management. Forest Dunes is in the heart of the Ausable River valley and sits adjacent to the famous Mason Tract stretch of the Ausable River. So it is critical to have no impact on the surrounding wildlife and habitats.

The Gold Signature Certification, which was achieved in October of 2003, is the highest level of certification that golf course communities can attain through AI. Every year Forest Dunes goes through an environmental audit as a requirement for recertification. Forest Dunes remains the only Gold Certified property in Michigan and is only one of twenty-one to be deemed such in the world. We are proud of this accomplishment and hope to attract members that wish to live in such a community.

Audubon International is a not-for-profit environmental organization. AI depends on memberships, sponsorships, grants, and other contributions to fund their operations. Environmental research and education are the main focus of this organization. Forest Dunes’ involvement with AI represents a commitment to an environmental ethic within the property but also the community.

Successful completion of the Gold Signature Certification involves the responsibility of many requirements being met. Involvement of AI from initial concept of a project is required for only Gold Certification participants. This insures that responsible actions are taken throughout the entire construction process. Wildlife inventories are recorded and monitored throughout the construction and maintained after successful completion. AI provides an environmental plan for the project. This is known as the Natural Resource Management Plan and is a guidebook throughout the certification process and a continual reference after successful completion. The focus is on five points; Water quality management and conservation, Wildlife and habitat management, Integrated pest management(IPM), Natural Resource Management Center, and Education.
